Bike buying tips

  • Department store bikes are TOYS and not BICYCLES

No matter the budget, stay away from cheap department store bikes.  Not to be elitist, it must be said that department store bikes are TOYS and not BICYCLES.  They are not built by professionals; they have poor quality components; there is usually no warranty; and they are often much, much more expensive to repair than even the most basic bike-shop quality bikes.  You get what you pay for!  If price is an issue, it’s better to buy a lower-end bike at a bike shop – it will be built by a professional mechanic, it will come with a warranty, it will have better quality components, and often will come with a year of free or highly discounted service.

  • Bike shop will help you

Also, a bike shop will help a new cyclist determine what type of bike to buy (what will BEST suit the rider’s needs); make sure the bike is a good fit (to maximize performace and comfort, and to prevent pain and possible injury).  A bike shop will help with the purchase of necessary accessories (flat repair kits, tools, clothing, helmets, etc.).  A bike shop will teach a beginning cyclist how to change a flat tire and do basic emergency repairs.

  • Avoid buying a used bike

Avoid buying a used bike unless you know what you’re looking for!  People often seek out a bargain but neglect things like bike fit, the wear and tear on the bike they’re buying (be especially careful if buying a bike from a racer!), and again, there is no warranty, and no relationship with a bike mechanic.

None of the services that a bike shop provides are available to someone who is buying a department store bike or a used bike – so buyer beware!  In short – go to a bike shop to get the best deals, the best value and the best service.
