Comfort mountain bikes are very similar to hybrids in that the rider position is very upright and comfortable. They are intended for very light, non-technical, non-aggressive trail riding because the components are simply not beefy or durable enough to withstand the abuses of hard trail riding.
Many have a suspension fork, again for light trail riding only, not for big hits; and a suspension seatpost that offers an inch or two of suspension – again, not for big hits, but easily soaks up small bumps and the chatter of rough roads. Comfort bikes are great casual travel bikes because of the low gearing, comfortable upright position and lower-grade components that are cheap to replace. They are also popular as rental bikes. Comfort mountain bikes are quite heavy relative to true mountain bikes, mostly due to lower-grade components. Speed is not as important; you won’t find these bikes at the weekend mountain bike races. Heavy as they are, they are popular with non-cyclists who just want an inexpensive bike to have occasional fun on, or take camping, or ride around the neighborhood. Eventually some of these riders will catch the cycling bug, and upgrade to a more serious bike.
